Men’s tennis tops Trojans in nail biter

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Queens fourth seeded men's tennis teamed faced off against the five seed Anderson University today in the SAC tournament. In what would become one of the most competitive matches all year, the Royals came out on top by the score of 5-4

The Royals opened the match strong with two doubles teams taking hard fought matches from the Trojans. Picking up critical wins for the Royals were the pairings of Andre Bafume and Ole-Jacob Meum by the score 8-2, and Ignacio Casali and Will Roberson by the score of 8-6.

With a 2-1 advantage the Royals entered the singles portion of the match needing three points to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. In one of the most tightly contested days of the year both teams found themselves battling for every possible point, with the match coming down to the final match.

Tied 4-4 with the match in the balance the freshman Roberson was eventually able to gut his way to a tight three set win in a marathon of a match by the score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Not surprisingly due to the intensity on the courts, the other two victories for Queens also came in three sets as Per-Erik Soler (6-2, 2-6, 6-2), and Jules Athalis (5-7, 6-4, 6-0) helped the Royals reach the magic number of five wins.

Following today's win the Royals will face the number one seeded Wingate tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
