Evans paces Royals in loss to Golden Bulls

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior forward Brent Evans recorded his fourth double-double of the season this evening scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as Queens University of Charlotte (2-4) fell to Johnson C. Smith University (6-1), 56-53. The loss to the Golden Bulls is the first in three seasons for the Royals in the nonconference match-up between the crosstown rivals.

Evans shot 9-13 from the floor and 3-4 from the free-throw line tonight to finish as the leading scorer. Also joining the Beaufort, S.C., native in double-digit scoring was senior guard Jarrett Stokes who notched 14 points. Senior forward Josh Clyburn pulled down 10 rebounds on the defensive end to total 11 for the night. He also tallied eight points and three rebounds.

Queens trailed the Golden Bulls by just one point, 27-26, after a fairly even matched half where both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor. After playing from behind for much of the opening 20 minutes of action, the Royals would go ahead 24-22 with 1:33 on the clock on a layup from Evans. A three-pointer from Trey Ervin followed by a jumper from Stokes tied the game at 22-22 with 3:53 to play. Neither team would score another basket until Evans' layin.

JCSU would regain the lead just before he break on a three-point play the old-fashioned way from Emilio Parks.

A Clyburn layup 16 seconds into the second half gave Queens a short 28-27 advantage. A lead change and two ties would follow before Evans was left open in the paint to put the Royals ahead, 35-33. Stokes would follow with a three-pointer to put the Royals in front by five.

The home team saw its largest lead of the game at 12:21 when Evans battled for a layup that put them up, 40-34.

Following the bucket from Evans, the momentum switched in JCSU's favor as they were able to put a short run together, taking over the lead with a three-ball from Robert Williams.

Evans responded with a dunk to tie things back up with 4:12 to go, but another three-pointer from JCSU's Williams put the visiting Golden Bulls on top, 49-46. A jumper from Stokes would cut their lead to one with 3:12 to play, but that's as close as Queens would get in the closing minutes as the buckets stopped falling on the offensive end.

Queens outscored JCSU 32-26 in the paint and won the battle under the boards, 48-43. The Royals turned the ball over 13 times, which the Golden Bulls converted into 16 points.

JCSU was led by Williams who finished the game with 19 points. Parks notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Queens returns to conference play on Saturday as they welcome Tusculum College to Curry Arena. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
