Royals earn comeback victory against Lincoln Memorial

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hosted Lincoln Memorial in what ended up being one of the most entertaining games of the season. Down two sets to none the Royals rallied from behind and took three straight sets to earn the victory in front of a raucous home crowd.
 
In the first set the Royals battled back-and-forth with the visiting Railsplitters, but eventually lost ground in the middle portion of the match. Trailing by as much as four the Royals did manage to narrow the margin to 23-24, but following a marathon of a point dropped the set 23-25.
 
The Royals offensively struggled in set two, and following a 4-4 tie they found themselves in a trailing position the rest of the set. With the Railsplitters offense clicking the Royals kept losing ground, and eventually the set by the score of 17-25.
 
Following the break a newly energized Royals squad entered Curry Arena, and soon had their visitors on their heels. The Royals quickly jumped to a 11-6 lead with senior Keri Kemp finding her rhythm offensively. From there the Royals were able to expand the lead with a multiple point service run by Alexa Sparrell that included a beauty of an ace. Up 21-14 the Royals refused to give up the lead and took the set by the score of 25-20.
 
With the crowd pushing them forward the Royals jumped to a 7-4 lead in set four following kills by Sparrell, Brittney Barren, and Meredith Jones. The Railsplitters eventually took the lead late in the match, but Queens refused to give in and came roaring back.
 
Down 15-18 Queens was fueled by multiple kills from Kemp and Elizabeth Bialkowski to even the score at 20 and force an LMU timeout. With momentum on their side the home side did not look back and earned a fourth set victory by the score of 25-23.
 
Following two massive set wins the Royals entered the deciding set with momentum, and quickly jumped to 7-0 lead behind three service aces by Barren. With senior Anna Gibbs adding multiple kills and the offense clicking on all cylinders the Royals cruised to a remarkable 15-7 win.
 
Kemp led the Royals with 20 kills and Gibbs, Jones, and Barren all ended in double figures as well. Contributing from her setter position was Taylor Riley who picked up 56 assists and 17 digs. Megan Mancini led the Royals with 20 digs, and was joined in double digits by Riley, Kemp, and Sparrell.
 
The Royals are currently 12-10 overall, and 10-8 in conference play. They host Carson-Newman tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. for senior day.
