Royals fall in battle with No. 10 Wingate

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team travelled tonight to conference rival Wingate to take on the number 10 ranked Bulldogs. From the opening serve the Royals gave their hosts all they could ask for, but ultimately dropped the tightly contested match 1-3.

In set one Queens was down early, before they were able to rally back and tie the score behind a strong serving run by Brittney Barren. From there the Royals began to build a lead with Anna Gibbs slamming the final point home to give the Royals a 25-23 win in front of a shocked crowd.

In the second frame the Royals found themselves exchanging points early on with a swarming Wingate side. After several runs by each team the score was tied at 18 apiece with the match capable of going to either squad. Unfortunately the Royals were unable to stop a late run by the Bulldogs and dropped the set 18-25.

Following a third set that Queens lost 9-25, the Royals backs were against the wall. But, the resilient team continued to fight and tied the score at 12-12 in the middle portion of the set. The home team did manage to put together a run to build a lead, but the Royals narrowed the margin late before dropping the set by the score of 22-25.

Keri Kemp led the Royals offensively on the night with 18 kills with Gibbs adding 11 to her stat line. Erin Mooney led the defensive line with 17 digs, while fellow seniors Kemp and Alexa Sparrell added 11 and 10 respectively.

The Royals are 7-9 overall and 7-7 in SAC play, and travel to Coker College this Friday.
