Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte (7-6) picked up a 66-61 win over Coker College (6-7) this evening at the Grady Cole Center, improving its conference record to 4-3. The Cobras fall to 4-4 in league action.
After scoring the first bucket of the game, the Royals found themselves down 17-2 with 14:58 to play in the first. A jumper from
David Mason (Decatur, Ga., Chamblee) would get the Royals going as they scored 17 straight points over a ten minute span in which the Cobras only saw two points. Queens guard
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) scored the final two points of the run, and then went on to score the following seven points for the Royals. At the half, Queens held a 30-27 lead.
Queens would opened the second with a 14-2 run, fighting for every point to put the Cobras away. Coker responded with a run of their own cutting the Royals' lead to two, 53-51, with 5:25 to play. An 8-2 spurt would give the Royals cushion heading into the final minute of play, where they went on to take the five point win despite a late push from the Cobras.
The Royals shot 54 percent from the floor, while the Cobras shot 44.2 percent.
Nichols led the Royals matching his season-high of 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) cored 18 connecting on 7-of-14 attempts. Mason finished the game with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Tre McLean (Charleston, S.C., West Ashley) scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds, collected seven steals, and dished out four assists.
Coker was led by Julian Nelson who scored 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting.
Before tonight's game, Stabler was recognized for being the 11
th player in program history to reach 1,000 points.
The Royals take on King College at home this Saturday at 4 p.m.
