VASS, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte women's golf team was able to hold on to the number one spot after playing so well yesterday in the Conference Carolinas Championships. Though adding 13 strokes on day two, the Royals' 312 on day one proved to be plenty of cushion as they won by 11 strokes walking away with their first ever Conference Carolinas Championship title. Queens had four players finish in the top-10 earning all-tournament team honors, and the win is the second of the year for the Royals.
Mount Olive College (326-322—648) finished second, while Pfeiffer University (335-351—686) placed third.
Julia Wennerlund completed day two with a 158 after shooting an 82 to go with her 76 from day one. The senior finished second overall and was named to the all-tournament team.
Taking third place was
Laura Belanger who fired a 79 and 81 for a two-round score of 160.
Camilla Mallberg was one stroke behind Belanger in fourth place with a 161 (79-82). Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Louise Sjoberg was the final Royal to make the all-tournament team after she carded a 163 (78-85).
Mallory Ruhling finished just outside of the top-10 tied in 12
th after shaving nine strokes off her round one score for an 80 on day two. She finished with a 169 (89-80).
Tegan Skirpstas of Mount Olive took the Medalist Award after firing a 150 (74-76).
Day One
Senior golfer
Julia Wennerlund (Bjarred, Sweden, Polhemskolan) leads the Royals in second place individually with a 76 after round one of the Conference Carolinas Tournament hosted by Belmont Abbey College. Queens University of Charlotte currently leads the entire field after carding a first round score of 312. Mount Olive College (326) and Pfeiffer (335) are in second and third, respectively.
The Royals have four players in the top-five individually with
Louise Sjoberg (Taby, SWEDEN, Rollingby Gymnasium) tied in third after firing a 78, while
Camilla Mallberg (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium) and
Laura Belanger (Waxhaw, N.C., Parkwood) are tied in fifth after each shot a 79.
Mallory Ruhling (Pittsburgh, Pa. , Penn Hills) is tied in 27
th with an 89.
In first place overall is Tegan Skirptas of Mount Olive with a 74.
The second and final round will be played tomorrow.
