CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens tennis couldn't capitalize on beautiful day at Ovens Athletic Center Monday afternoon, as both programs fell to Augusta State.
The women's team, ranked No. 44, got out to a shaky start, losing all three doubles matches en route to a 7-2 loss to the No. 29 Jaguars.
Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) and
Hewit Hawn (Naples, Fla., Community School of Naples) gave Julie Fontaine and Camila Correa a run for their money, but ultimately fell 9-8.
Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) and
Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) picked up a pair of singles wins in the first and fourth flight, respectively. Mileva defeated Victoria Lindquvist 6-4, 7-5 while Roberts outlasted R. Oliveira 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in a highly-completive match.
The men's match was a power struggle from the start, as two of three matches went to extra points with each team taking a point. The Royals'
Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, L'Essor Secondary School) and
Raahil Dhruva (London, England, Parmiter's) fought for a 9-7 win over No. 13 Bernardo Fernandes and Henrique Boturao, while
Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario) and
Alex McKinzie's (Austin, Tex., Lake Travis) ralley fell short in their 9-7 loss.
In singles competition, Lee-Daigle and Dhruva continued to take care of business in the first and fourth flights, respectively. No. 41 Lee-Daigle dominated No. 37 Bernardo Fernandes 6-3, 6-3 and Dhruva made short work of Jenner Stevenson 6-4, 6-2.
In the second and third flights,
David Hannon (Gastonia, N.C., Episcopal Alexandria) and
Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) both forced three sets, but were unable to pick up the wins.
The Royals return to action Friday at 2:30 pm when they welcome USC-Lancaster for a scrimmage.
