SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Royals now have an overall record of 18-8 after defeating Converse College (3-22, 1-14) 3-0 and then falling to Lincoln Memorial (18-5, 11-4) 3-0 in back-to-back matches. Queens University of Charlotte's volleyball conference record improves to 12-2.
The Royals beat Converse by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-21, while losing to Lincoln Memorial by scores of 16-25, 21-25 and 17-25.
Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) led the Royals today with 17kills on the day.
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) and
Lindsey Everhart (Cincinnati, Ohio, McNicholls) tallied 14 and 10 kills, respectively, also contributing to the offense.
Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass) (24) and
Avery Moore (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) (22) split time at the setter position dishing out a combined total of 46 assists.
Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) led the Royals in digs with 17 for the day. The Royals had 11 total blocks on the day.
The Royals dominated the Valkyries in set one and two for a 2-0 lead heading into the third. Converse cut Queens' comfortable lead down to three, 13-10, in the final set of play. The Valkyries would get to within three on three more occasions before the Royals put them away.
Ashley Winters (Fredericktown, Ohio, Highland) tallied three kills in the final plays of the game.
In game two, the Railsplitters quickly built an 8-3 lead over Queens in the opening set. Queens closed the gap to four on a kill by
Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) but that was as close as Queens would get as Lincoln Memorial took the set 25-16. The Royals were able to go on a 3-0 run bringing the Railsplitters within two, 21-19, late in the second set. However, three straight points scored by Lincoln Memorial gave them the push to take the 2-0 lead.
The Royals led early in the third before the Railsplitters tied the game up at 4-4. Two more ties followed, the final coming on back-to-back service aces by
Taylor Riley making the score 13-13. Queens couldn't get over the hump though as Lincoln Memorial closed the set on a 12-4 run for the match win.
Queens has three away games next week before returning to “The Oven” to host the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
