CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In the Queens senior day, the Royals seniors ended their regular season careers at the Ovens Athletics Center on a high note defeating Mount Olive 71-48. The three Queen seniors,
Cecilia Tchangoue (St. Jean Le Blanc, France, Forsyth Country Day),
Ashley McGuirt (Indian Trail, N.C., Providence Day) and
Jacquia Winstead (Elm City, N.C., Beddingfield), combined for 37 points and 23 rebounds.
Queens is currently in a four-way tie with Mount Olive, Limestone and Belmont Abbey for third place in the conference with league records of 14-7. Overall, both Queens and Mount Olive hold a 15-11 record. The top four seeds host the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament starting next week.
Opening the game with a 16-1 run, it was all Queens from the start. Queens held the Trojans in single digit scoring from more than half of the first stanza. Mount Olive reached double digit points, 11, with 8:28 to play. The Royals closed the first half with a 17 point lead, 44-27, but had a margin of 20 earlier in the half.
The Royals cooled a little in the second half, but the large lead from the first half carried them through. Mount Olive never came within 14 points of Queens. At the end, the Royals ended the game with their largest lead of the night, 23.
Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) scored the game-high 18 points and also grabbed the game-high rebounds with 13. Tchangoue and McGuirt each scored 16 with Tchangoue pulling down four rebounds and McGuirt had 12 boards. Tchangoue's 16 points becomes her career best. Winstead contributed five points and seven rebounds.
As a team Queens out-rebounded Mount Olive 50-30 and blocked eight of the Trojans' shots.
Helen Moore led the Trojans with 15 points.
Queens plays their last contest of the regular season this Saturday at Erskine. Tipoff is at 2pm.
