Queens wins on the road, 2-0
PEMBROKE, N.C. (9/6/2009) – Queens University of Charlotte used two first half goals to extend their series winning streak to four games over the University of North Carolina- Pemroke Sunday evening at Varsity Grounds. Despite alowing 10 of UNCP's season-high 14 shots in the second half, Queens collected their second consecutive shut out of the season with a 2-0 win .
Rondell Honora fired off a game-best six shots on goal for the Braves (1-2-0), but Queens (2-1-0) used a pair of communication miscues to net the only goals of the game and up its record to a perfect 6-0-0 in Pembroke. Jonathan Grajeda (Orange County, N.Y., Monroe-Woodbury ) tallied an assist on each goal, with Tyler Dunmyer (Florence, S.C., West Florence )and Jeremy Chambers (Princeton, W.Va., Princeton Senior)providing the scores.
Chris Raines (Aurora, Colo., Cherokee Trail) registered a trio of saves for Queens, including a diving stop in the second half, to turn in his first clean sheet of the campaign. Dean Moore snared three saves in his second-straight start for UNCP, but was saddled with the loss.
UNCP possessed the ball well through the first 15 minutes of play, but it was Queens that collected the first shot of the game when Grajeda fired off a long-range shot that was pounced on by Moore. A short time later, however, Dunmyer's header off a Grajeda corner kick in the 18th minute (17:43) would be the only goal Queens would need. The Royals would pad the lead out to a pair of scores at the 25:09 mark when confusion in the box led directly to Chambers' short-range strike.
The Braves got a majority of the play through the first 23 minutes of the second half – pounding out a 6-1 shot advantage in the time frame – but Raines was able to keep the hosts off the board. Honora would give Raines his best test of the game in the 60th minute, but the Colorado native left his feet with a diving stop to keep the Black and Gold off the board.
Queens looks to continue their success on the road when they travel to Anderson University September 12th for the open of their Conference Carolinas schedule.
