Brett Karpman

Karpman has been at the helm of the Queens Tennis Program since 2007 building off a program that won a combined six matches for the men’s and women’s programs in the year prior. During his eight year tenure, Karpman has developed both teams in to nationally recognized programs. This past season Queens held one of its highest national spotlights, as the men tied their highest ranking to date topping the list at No. 29 while the women climbed to their furthest spot at No. 28 on the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations poll. To add, both programs held in the top 50 during the entire spring season as the women concluded the year at No. 40 and the men concluded at No. 47.

During his tenure, Karpman led the women to a perfect 17-0 regular season in 2010 to earn an NCAA appearance. The women would again make their way to the NCAA tournament in 2015. For the men, Karpman’s leadership found Queens its first ever Men’s Conference Carolinas Championship in 2011 and NCAA appearance. His programs have established new records for the highest winning percentage for each squad with the women at .910 and the men at .833.

In the South Atlantic Conference, Queens grabbed the Female Freshman Tennis Player of the Year Award twice as well as the Female Tennis Player of the Year Award. In just two short years, Queens has had 10 players named to the All-Conference Team with eight more receiving honorable mention honors. The women’s team worked their way to the conference finals in 2015 while the men found a semifinal matchup.

Under Karpman both teams have flourished on and off the court as the squads have a combined 189-104 record over the course of his tenure.  Karpman has produced 35 all-conference selections as well as freshmen of the year and player of the year honors along with numerous post season awards.  Karpman has also been selected as coach of the year in consecutive seasons (2009-2010 and 2010-2011), an honor voted upon by his peers. Additionally, he was named the Southeast Region’s Wilson/ITA Men’s Coach of the Year this past season.

The program’s success off the court is manifested through many volunteer opportunities including the Ronald McDonald House and various other organizations in charlotte. His teams have earned the awards for the athletic program with the highest student athlete GPAs over the past eight consecutive years. Five members of the tennis team have been awarded the ITA's prestigious Arthur Ashe Leadership Award in the last six years. Only eight are given out every year.

A native of Montreal, Canada, Karpman works as a strength and conditioning consultant for Elite International and American juniors. He previously worked with The University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) as an assistant coach for the Seahawks tennis team, leading the team to their first win over a nationally-ranked team since the program’s inception. There, he helped recruit players from around the nation for the UNCW men’s tennis team, while helping the Seahawks compile their best season in the University’s history (14-6 in the CAA). Prior to this position, Karpman worked with Adidas Inc. as the coordinator of its tennis camps. He has also coached many of North Carolina’s top-rising juniors. Karpman has partnered his time at Queens with serving on the NCAA Regional Ranking Committee for both the men and women.

Karpman received a bachelor’s of science degree from Queens in 2006. As an undergraduate student he participated in Queens’ varsity tennis program from 2002 – 2004. While playing for the Royals tennis team he was named a National Presidential Scholar Athlete and served as the assistant coach from 2004-2006. During his time at Queens, Karpman was a recipient of the John Sykes Trustee Scholarship.

“We are extremely thrilled to have Brett back on campus and serving with the Queens family community,” said King. “His passion and energy about leading student-athletes and coaching tennis is the right combination for moving our program to the next level. Queens is fortunate to have Brett at the leadership helm.”
