Rob Tate joined the Royals wrestling staff as an assistant coach for their inaugural season before being promoted to head coach in the spring of 2018.
The Royals began DI competition in the fall of 2022 competing as an independent.Â
In his first full season at the helm, Tate led the Queens wrestling program into its inaugural  Division II season while competing in the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas, a joint conference between men's wrestling programs in the South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas. During the 2018-19 campaign, the Royals went on to win their first Division II duel meet in program history, while Melvin Rubio became the first Queens wrestler to advance to and record a win at NCAA DII Championships.Â
In 2017, under Tate's leadership, the Royals picked up wins over Clemson, East Carolina, and South Carolina's club teams. In addition, 10 wrestlers qualified for competition at the NCWA National Wrestling Championships where Queens finished fifth out of 79 teams competing. The Royals also brought home two individual national champions in Noah Curreri and Devinaire Hayes. Curreri completed the Championships undefeated at 6-0 while Hayes was undefeated at 5-0. Additionally, Melvin Rubio, Noah Gilbert, and Stephon Halliburton also earned All-America honors as a result of their finishes.
Â
Tate came to Queens after serving as an assistant coach at Charlotte Country Day School, where he worked for two years. During that time, he helped to coach one National Prep Tournament qualifier, one state champion, and three additional state place-winners.
Â
Prior to his work with Country Day, Tate returned to his alma-mater Gardner-Webb University where he worked from 2012-2014 and helped two athletes qualify for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. From 2009-2011, Tate worked with East Gaston High School as an assistant coach helping the warriors produce two state champions and three additional placers. He also oversaw the team at Stanley Middle School as the head coach during the 2011 season.
In 2018, Tate was elected to serve on the board of directors for the Wrestlers in Business Network - Charlotte Chapter, as well as the North Carolina/USA Wrestling board of directors. He was also chosen as the Schoolboy/girl age division director for the state of North Carolina.Â
Â
In his collegiate career at Gardner-Webb, Tate was a NCAA Division I Tournament qualifier, East Regional Champion and two-time finalist, and East Region Wrestler of the Week on several occasions. He was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Pembroke Classic in 2007.
Â
At East Gaston High School, Tate was a two-time All-American at Junior Nationals where he placed fourth in Greco-Roman and sixth in Freestyle. He was also a state placer his sophomore year, a state champion as a junior, and the state runner-up his senior year. Throughout high school he was on three state tournament championship teams, two state dual runner-up teams, and one state tournament runner-up team. Tate’s overall high school record of 211-28 still ranks him in the top 10 of career victories in the state of North Carolina.
