John Long

John Long brings Queen's a wealth of experience and an enthusiasm for the sport.  He reaches across all levels of the sport to help guide athletes to a great experience and a life long love of the sport.  This is evident by his previous coaching and he is excited about growing and expanding involvement in the sport with the help of the University.

"This is a great opportunity that I have been blessed with.  I enjoy nothing more than sharing my passion for swimming with others and interacting with athletes to help them find purpose and enjoyment from the sport.  This family at Queen's will be a great platform to continue this growth."

Long has transitioned from an accomplished athlete to a full time coach after finishing his collegiate career in the Queen City. He has worked with the Queen's University team as a volunteer assistant and has been a major part of the success of the program.  This included multiple national times, NCAA, and Conference Records.

Long also has worked with Team Elite of SwimMac.  His role there is videographer and has given him a wealth of experience.  He works on improving technical aspects in the pool and worked under the direction of Olympic Coach David Marsh to help improve the like of Ryan Lochte, Cullen Jones and other Olympians.

He has also had great results at the club level of the sport.  John coached for the Aquatic Team of Mecklenburg(ATOM) for the past 3 seasons and has made a major impact on the team.  In that short time the club has grown from 80-100 swimmers and has seen a tremendous improvement in times for these athletes.

Before starting into coaching, John swam at the 2012 Olympic Team Trials, competed for Queens at the Division II Nationals, and was also a part of a Division I National Championship Team at Auburn University.

Long graduated from Auburn University with a bachelors degree in Exercise Science in 2011.  While at Auburn, John studied under Dr David Pascoe on High Intensity Interval Training(HIIT) for triathletes.  He culminated with a senior paper there with a study on taper for swimming.  John is married to his loving wife, Emily, who he met at Auburn and was also a swimmer.
