CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite outhitting the Runnin' Bulldogs 12-8, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team came up short on Wednesday evening, falling 5-2 to Gardner-Webb at The Stick on Wednesday evening.
A five-run fourth inning by Gardner-Webb proved to be the difference, as the Royals were unable to recover despite strong individual at-bats throughout the lineup.
Queens opened the scoring in the third inning on an RBI single from Olivia Thornton, who also added a second run-scoring hit in the seventh to pace the Royals offensively. Lindsey DeRoeck led all batters with a three-for-four day, including a double and two runs scored. Taylor Jones and Lauren Byrd also recorded multi-hit outings.
The Royals had opportunities throughout the contest but left 11 runners on base and grounded into two double plays. Kenzie Forrester was tagged with the loss in relief after Gardner-Webb pieced together six hits to plate five runs in the top of the fourth. Abby Craver started the game with two scoreless innings, and Jordan Dunn closed it out without allowing a run.
Gardner-Webb's Alli Stidham earned the win, limiting Queens to one run.
