THE SHORT STORY:Â
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Queens University men's tennis team faced a tough battle on the road Friday afternoon, falling 6-1 to UNC Asheville at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs set the tone early in doubles play, claiming victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the opening point.
- The No. 1 doubles match featuring Queens duo of
Win Steveker and
Jan Montero Diaz remained unfinished at 4-4 when the doubles point was decided.
- In singles competition, Queens encountered a series of closely contested matches. UNC Asheville extended its lead with a win at No. 1 after
Laurenz Blickwede was forced to retire early.
- The Bulldogs followed with dominant victories at No. 4 and No. 5 to take a commanding 4-0 lead and clinch the match.
- Despite the overall result, the Royals saw a bright spot in
Filippo Scala, who picked up a straight-set victory at No. 6, defeating Trevor Gray 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to secure Queens lone point of the match.
- Steveker and Montero Diaz each battled to decisive third-set tiebreaks but ultimately fell in their respective matches at No. 2 and No. 3.
