THE SHORT STORY:Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Queens University men's tennis team (3-9, 0-1 ASUN) put up a strong fight in its conference opener but ultimately fell 5-2 to North Florida (4-11, 1-0 ASUN) on Friday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- The Royals started strong in doubles, securing the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. The duo of
Win Steveker and
Jan Montero Diaz dominated their match at No. 1 doubles, cruising to a 6-1 win over North Florida's Andreas Scott and Gianluca Filoramo.
- At the No. 3 position,
Lukas Gosselin and
Luke Coppage delivered another solid performance, taking a 6-3 victory to clinch the opening point for Queens.
- The No. 2 doubles match went unfinished.
SINGLES
- In singles play, North Florida responded with a strong effort, winning five of the six matchups to claim the overall victory.
- Queens lone singles victory came at the No. 3 position, where
Jan Montero Diaz put together a commanding performance, defeating Youssef Labbene in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Laurenz Blickwede battled in a three-set thriller at No. 1 singles but came up just short against UNF's Andreas Scott, falling 6-4, 5-7, 3-6.

Win Steveker also had a competitive outing at No. 2 singles but dropped a tight two-set match to Bruno Vietri, 5-7, 4-6.

Gavin Ryan (No. 4),
Jake Grimes (No. 5), and
Filippo Scala (No. 6) each fell in straight sets, with Scala taking his match to a third set before ultimately coming up short.
NEXT UP
The Royals now return home for a pair of non-conference matches, hosting Methodist College on Sunday at 1 p.m. before facing Omaha on Monday at 10 a.m.
