CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team (1-3) hosted Virginia Tech (5-1, 1-0) this afternoon, falling 21-10 to the Hokies at Dickson Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Hokies opened the game with back-t0-back goals, Queens was able to tie the game at 2-2 with goals from
Jordan Tandler and
Elise Grissett. The two teams traded goals once more before Virginia Tech scored two in a row to end the quarter on top, 5-3.
In the second, the Hokies opened with three straight goals to extend their lead to five before
Kayleen Favreau stopped the run with a pair of goals, giving the game an 8-5 score. However, Virginia Tech would close the half with a 4-0 run to take a 12-5 lead into the break.
Tandler would score the first goal of the second half to cut the margin to six, 12-6, but five consecutive goals from the Hokies would trigger the running clock and give Virginia Tech control of the game for good.
KEY STATS & NOTES
- Kayleen Favreau led the Royals with four goals on the day. She now has 153 career points.
- Lily Greenwell and Jordan Tandler each had two goals.
- Avery McMullin led defensively with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
- Devan Maready completed the game with eight saves for Queens.
- Lauren Render led the Hokies with eight goals while Mia Pozzi had seven points on three goals and four assists.
- Aaliya Jone took the win in goal after totaling eight saves.
- Virginia Tech outshot the Royals 34-20, putting 29 shots on goal compared to Queens' 18 shots on goal.
- The Hokies won the battle at the draw 24-9 and edged the Royals in ground balls, 14-13.
