Charlotte, N.C. – The Queens women's tennis team faced a challenging but rewarding day at the Howard Levine Tennis Center, splitting their matches with a tough 5-2 loss to Appalachian State before bouncing back with a dominant 6-0 victory over Montreat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
Match 1: Appalachian State 5, Queens 2
Despite strong performances from key players, Queens fell short against a competitive Appalachian State squad. In singles action,
Lucy Hogan secured a hard-fought victory at the No. 1 spot, outlasting Taya Powell in a thrilling 7-6, 6-7, 10-7 battle.
Jett Coetzee in her first appearance of the year also delivered a clutch win at No. 5, rallying from a set down to defeat Cassidy Carlson 2-6, 7-5, 10-8. However, Appalachian State claimed victories in the remaining singles matches, along with a forfeit at No. 6.
In doubles play, the duo of Hogan and
Andreea Onitoiu provided a bright spot, defeating Powell and Ruby Broadbent 6-2 at the top position. However, App State secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, the latter coming by forfeit.
Match 2: Queens 6, Montreat 0
Queens rebounded impressively in their second match of the day, sweeping Montreat in a commanding performance. The Royals dominated in singles play, dropping just six total games across five completed matches. Hogan led the charge with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1, while Cvitanovic (No. 2), Onitoiu (No. 3), Serb (No. 4), and Coetzee (No. 5) all cruised to straight-set wins.
The doubles matches followed a similar pattern, with Queens securing both completed contests in convincing fashion. Hogan and Onitoiu defeated Montreat's top pair 6-1, while Cvitanovic and Serb secured a matching 6-1 win at No. 2.
