CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team battled the Western Carolina Catamounts to a scoreless draw in their first road test of the season on Sunday afternoon. The shutout marked the Royals second straight clean sheet, and eighth in Division 1.
Turning Point
The difference in the afternoon affair proved to be the Royals strong defensive presence as the backline turned away multiple Catamount scoring opportunities, particularly late in the second half. In the 73
rd minute, the Catamounts saw their best scoring opportunity washed away as
Erica Turner made a diving save. Just four minutes later, the Catamounts generated another scoring opportunity, but
Hilda Svensson was placed perfectly next to the left pipe to kick it away.
Key Stats & Notes
- The afternoon was spotlighted by an incredible performance in goal from Erica Turner. The graduate student faced 18 shots between the pipes and pulled in eight saves. The Dublin, Ireland native has 34 career shutouts under her belt which is a program record.
- Sophomore Annika Wilker led the Royals attack with a pair of shots, including one on goal. The two shots were a career-high for the second-year defensive back.
- Savannah Stuart recorded the Royals only other shot placing it on goal in the 81st minute.
- Making her first career start, junior Libby Browne turned in a career-high 51 minutes of action helping the Royals post a shutout.
- Five Royals, including Erica Turner, Grace Sain, Savannah Stuart, Annika Wilker, and Chelsea DeVettori turned in complete games.
- Coming back from a 2022 season-ending injury, senior Girah Durant made her first appearance since October 9, 2022 contributing 23 minutes of action.
