CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens softball faced off with Austin Peay Sunday afternoon, playing the final two games of the Royals' first home ASUN series. The first game was put into a lengthy delay as the skies opened up late in the fifth inning, but the game would eventually continue and saw the Governors come out on top. In the final game of the series, Queens' pitching held Austin Peay scoreless as they'd grab a 7-0 victory.
GAME 1
Austin Peay got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. After remaining scoreless for the first four innings, the Royals managed to score their first run of the game thanks to a sacrifice hit by
Kiana Termine which brought home
Gerlea Patton and cut the deficit to one.
Queens continued to put runners on base in an attempt to come back, however Austin Peay would hold on for a 2-1 victory.
Abby Craver got the start and pitched 3.2 innings and fanned two before being replaced by
Autumn Courtney who managed a pair of strikeouts of her own.
GAME 2
Both teams struggled to get things going early, but Queens opened up the scoring party in the third inning. With
Kaylee DeJesus on base,
Kayla Smith smashed a double to right center field which brought home DeJesus and saw her advance to third on the throw home.
One batter later,
Lindsey DeRoeck found space through the right side that brought home Smith and gave Queens a 2-0 lead.
After a pair of walks loaded the bases,
Gerlea Patton lined one down the left field line that moved each runner up one base and increased the lead to three, before a bases-loaded walk by
Caroline Johnson brought the Royals to four.
Up 5-0 in the sixth inning, DeRoeck brought home Smith for the second time in the game with a double to deep right-center field.
Patton would later bring home DeRoeck for Queens' seventh and final run of the game.
