Riley Cheek Extends Hitting Streak to 13 Games in ASUN Opener

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped their ASUN opener on Friday night as the Jacksonville State Gamecocks used a nine-run sixth inning to grab the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Jacksonville State would strike first in the bottom of the third inning with two runs on four hits. The Gamecocks would lace three straight singles to load the bases. Royals starter Daniel Bagwell induced a 6-4-3 double play trading a run for two outs. With a runner on third, T.J. Reeves would hit a high flyball to center field which would get lost in the sky for an RBI triple.

-The Gamecocks extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth with three runs on four hits. With a runner on first and two outs, JSU strung together a pair of singles and a double to increase their lead.

-Queens plated their first run in the top of the sixth inning following a leadoff triple from rookie Sam Hunter. Riley Cheek would pick up his 12th RBI bringing Hunter in with a groundout.

-Jacksonville State opened up the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with nine runs on 11 hits, including four extra-base hits.

 

BY THE NUMBERS
-Riley Cheek extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a 2-for-3 night. The graduate student has posted multi-hit performances in eight games this season.

-Freshman Sam Hunter laced his fourth extra-base hit of the season with a triple.

-Zach Weston picked up his sixth hit of the season with a single in the seventh inning.

-The 24 hits by the Gamecocks marked the most hits by a Queens opponent in a single game.

-JSU got their lead-off hitter on base in 4-of-6 innings which translated into a .607 batting average with runners on base.
