CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball head coach
Grant Leonard announced Thursday afternoon that senior forward
Gavin Rains will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
"Any team with a
Gavin Rains on it is a better team by an infinite amount," said head coach
Grant Leonard. "His dedication to this team has been unwavering for five seasons. We as a group are devastated that all the hard work that Gavin put into his rehab won't allow him to get back to battle with his teammates. Gavin is a Royal for life and we are forever grateful he chose Queens and represented us with the highest standards."
Rains, a Trinity, North Carolina product, is one of the best rebounders to wear the blue and gold uniform. Rains will finish his career fifth all-time in career rebounds (757), first in offensive rebounds (305), third in rebounding average (8.3), and sixth in minutes played (2,117). Last season against Paine, Rains tied the single-game record pulling down 19 boards. Across 19 appearances last year, Rains led the ASUN in rebounds per game and sat top 15 nationally across Division 1.
"I want to express my deepest gratitude to the coaching staff, teammates, and everyone associated with Queens Basketball," said
Gavin Rains. "The bonds forged and experiences gained have truly made it a second family for me. Though my fifth-year pursuit for another championship is cut short by unforeseen medical challenges post-knee surgery, I leave with a heart full of memories and the satisfaction of giving my all on the court. I'm still at a loss for words because this was such a derailing on my year and it's tough to say this is the end to a sport that I have loved and played all my life. While I won't have the extra year to fulfill past goals, I cherish the journey and the love for the game that will endure beyond my playing days. Thank you, Queens, for an incredible chapter in my life."
The senior suffered a season-ending knee injury last year against Jacksonville.
