CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Another first was accomplished for Queens women's volleyball, as they hit the road to take on Liberty in their first conference competition of the season as a member of the ASUN.
Queens put up a valiant effort against the Flames, who were competing in their fourth-consecutive home match, but ultimately fell short, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18).
The first set was a back-and-forth showdown as there were eight lead changes throughout the set. Sophomore
Alleigh Johnson and junior
Victoria Wood got going early with two kills each to give the squad an early 5-4 lead. Later in the set, a kill by sophomore Kayling Dowling helped spark a three-point run for the Royals which gave them a 17-15 lead, the largest they had all set. Liberty fought back, and while
Alleigh Johnson managed to gather three more kills to help take the set, Liberty pulled away late and narrowly took the first set, 25-23.
Johnson continued to produce early on in the second set, as she added another pair of kills and a block assist to put Queens up 4-3 early. The Flames mustered together a few runs throughout the set but the Royals' hard-nose play-style kept the in the game, eventually re-tying the score at 18 a-piece, thanks to another kill by Dowling and an ace by star libero
Jesse George. The offensive would stall and Liberty would go on to take the set, 25-19.
Sophomores
Anna Law and
Kayla McDuffie got going in the third set as Law added a pair of kills to her resume and McDuffie earned a kill and back-to-back aces to help Queens fight back but a pair of good runs by Liberty gave helped propel them to take the set and ultimately the match.
