CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte right handed pitcher,
Tanner Jacobson became the first player in program history to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft after being taken with the 307
th pick in the 10
th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. The pick is a milestone as Jacobson will be the first Royal to embark on a professional career following the program's fourth year in existence.
"What a special day for Tanner, the Jacobson family, and Queens University," said Royals head coach
Ross Steedley. "These moments are what players like him dream of and I couldn't be prouder and more thrilled for Tanner to chase his dream. He was a joy to coach and watch compete and he represented our programs and Queens the right way."
This past season, Jacobson was a pivotal arm for the Royals rotation throwing 61.2 innings across 16 appearances, including eight starts. The Pittsburgh native posted a 5-3 record and a 4.09 earned run average while hurling a pair of complete games. Jacobson held opposing hitters to a .209 batting average and struck out a team-high 79 batters. In a very difficult South Atlantic Conference, Jacobson was top 15 in the league in earned run average and strikeouts.
"Tanner is an extremely hard worker, he is highly competitive, and he is a great teammate," emphasized Steedley. "Tanner is a Queens graduate and now he is an MLB draft pick by one of the best and classiest organizations in professional baseball. We love Tanner and can't wait to watch him in The Show very soon. Go Cards and Go Royals!"
The Royals are set to embark on their first season at the Division I level after making the transition to the ASUN Conference on July 1, 2022. Last year, Queens made history earning their first postseason tournament berth as the four seed at the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The resilient group posted a 29-22 record while facing the toughest competition as they held a top 40 strength of schedule.
