HICKORY, N.C. - The No. 12 Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team picked up their third sweep of the season when they defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The victory gets Queens back in the win column after having their 11-match winning streak snapped. Queens improved their road record to a perfect 5-0 with the win.
"I am extremely proud of our women today," explained Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "We rebounded from a tough loss last Saturday and put up one of our best performances of the year. This team was focused from the jump, and played with tremendous energy and enthusiasm for the entire match. When we lock in like this, we are a dangerous team."
The Royals won the doubles point by collecting a 6-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles as No. 37
Jill Morse and
Marie Bertran De Balanda took down the No. 27 duo in the nation according to the ITA National Rankings. After the Bears took the No. 2 court, the pairing of
Hanna Axelsson and
Amelie Allard came back and finished off the great start with a 6-3 win to secure the early 1-0 advantage.
Singles play began with a 6-2, 6-4 sweep by
Viktorija Veselinova in the first court. "Viktorija Veslinova was everywhere in singles play today and she was terrific at setting the tone for us," stated Boykin. "Her court coverage and defense always make it difficult for her opponents – but Viki is at her best when she uses her foot speed to move forward. She is good in the red zone and can finish well off of both side."
On the No. 2 court, No. 38
Jill Morse stormed in to win her singles match 8-3 which improved the sophomore to 10-2 this season.
Hanna Axelsson added to her season wins with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to seal the match for the Royals. "Hanna was really solid today as she used a lot of shot variety to keep her opponent off-balance," said Boykin. "I thought she played a really smart match for us today."
Marie Bertran De Balanda and
Katya Khramtcova emerged victorious in their respective singles matches. Balanda took down Whelan in No. 4 singles 8-2 while Khramtcova was victorious in No. 6 singles 8-1.
Caity Klaassen would take the crown on the No. 5 court 6-1, 7-5 to seal the sweep for Queens.
"
Caity Klaassen is playing with tremendous confidence right now and she is a really tough out," said Boykin.
The Royals are back in action on Friday when they host an intra-squad scrimmage following the celebration of their senior class. Be sure to come support the team with the senior day festivities beginning at 2:00 p.m.
