PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's wrestling team (3-14; 1-8 SACC) finished eighth with 40.5 points at the NCAA Super Regional II Tournament hosted by UNC Pembroke.
Noah Curreri (184 lb) finished second in his weight class to advance to his third consecutive NCAA Championship.
Stephon Halliburton (174 lb) and
Austin Watkins (197 lb) each finished third to capture the first NCAA Championship bids of their careers.
Newberry won the tournament with a final score of 130.5.
After winning his opening match by fall, Curreri won his next two by decision to advance to the first place match. Curreri lost by decision to JaQuez Bostic of Limestone University to claim second place and a trip to the NCAA Championship.
Halliburton received a first round bye before losing to Jack Bond of Lander University by decision. He responded by winning his next three matches including a rematch victory over Bond in the third place match to clinch a trip to the NCAA's.
Watkins also received a bye and won his first match before losing his next by decision to enter the consolation bracket. He won his final two matches of the night, including the third place match to become the third Royal with an NCAA Championship bid.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled to take place on Friday-Saturday, March 11-12 in St. Louis, Mo.
