Dominant Second Half Leads #10 Queens Past UVA Wise

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 10/15 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (22-3, 18-3 SAC) keeps rolling as they pick up a dominant victory over UVA Wise (4-20, 3-17 SAC), 114-60, inside Curry Arena. It is the Royals sixth time reaching triple digits on the year and their second-highest scoring output of the year. With the win, the Royals sweep the season series against the Cavaliers, and they keep up their season-long ten game winning streak.

The first minutes of the game saw both the Royals and the visiting Cavaliers in a back-and-forth affair. Leading 10-9 with 14:16 remaining in the first half, the Royals would find their footing on the offensive end going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 17-9. After a layup by the Cavaliers, the Royals would quickly respond with a 9-2 run, including three consecutive three-pointers, to take a 26-13 lead with 12:04 to play.

Both teams would go on runs of their own over the next three minutes, as the Royals would find themselves maintaining a comfortable 34-21 advantage with 8:46 to play in half one. After the Cavaliers began to chip away at the Royals lead, the Royals ramped up the defensive pressure to go on a 10-1 run to extend their lead to the largest of the half, 46-28 with 2:32 remaining. The Cavaliers made a layup and went 1-for-2 from the line in the final two minutes, to trim the Royals halftime lead to 46-31.

The Royals kept building their lead to start the second half, outscoring the Cavaliers 8-4 in the first 2 minutes of the half to extend their lead to 54-35 with 18:19 to play. The next few minutes the two teams would trade baskets, before the Royals would knock down two consecutive three-pointers as they went on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 71-46 with 14:05 to play.

The Royals would one-up that run later, however, as they would use six consecutive makes from deep to go on a crushing 24-2 run to take a commanding 95-50 lead with 7:19 to play. The Royals would continue to build their commanding lead, as they would outscore the Cavaliers 19-10 the rest of the way to get a dominating 114-60 victory inside Curry Arena.

Six Royals, Jamari Smith, Kenny Dye, AJ McKee, Kalib Matthews, Jay'Den Turner and Josh Dilling scored in double figures for the Royals. Smith led the Royals with 21 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. BJ McLaurin was strong on the glass for the Royals, as he grabbed a team-leading 9 rebounds off the bench for the Royals. Kenny Dye, who is third in the SAC in assists per game, was the usual steady presence for the Royals as he added 12 assists to his 17 points to secure the double-double.

The Royals shot an incredibly efficient 64% from the field and a scorching hot 65% from three-point range. The Royals defense kept up its swarming play, as they forced 23 Cavalier turnovers on the night. The Royals played unselfish, clean basketball on the night as they totaled 25 assists to just 10 turnovers. The Royals bench was crucial in victory, as they totaled 47 total points.

The Royals return to action on Wednesday night, January 16th, against Limestone University inside Curry Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm and the game will be broadcast on the Queens Sports Network.
