HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's wrestling team (2-11; 1-5 SACC) split its two matches versus Lander University and Coker University earning its first conference win of the season.
Lander 29 Queens 18
After the Royals forfeited the 125 lb match and lost the 133 lb match by technical fall,
Nico D'Amico tallied to his strong freshman season winning by decision to put the Royals on the board.
Stephon Halliburton (174 lb) ended a string of three consecutive Lander victories, winning by decision. Ninth ranked
Noah Curreri (184 lb) pinned his opponent to cut the deficit to 26-12.
Josh Voelkel (285 lb) concluded the match with a win by fall but Queens fell short by a 29-18 final score. Lander remains undefeated in SACC competition.
Queens 25 Coker 24
Queens surmounted three forfeited matches totaling 18 Coker points to defeat the Cobras and earn its first SACC victory of the season.
Griffen Gonzalez (133 lb) pinned his opponent to earn the Royals first points. D'Amico (141 lb) followed winning by decision to take the Royals first lead.
After dropping three matches including two forfeits, Queens rallied to three consecutive wins with Halliburton (174 lb) winning by decision, Curreri (184 lb) winning by forfeit, and
Austin Watkins (197) winning by fall.
Coker won the final match of the day by decision but it was not enough to unseat the Royals who prevailed to their first conference victory.
Queens returns to Charlotte for its first home match of the new year versus Limestone on Thursday, January 27th.
