JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – After dropping the first two sets of the afternoon by double digits, the Queens (5-1 overall, 2-0 SAC) women's volleyball team rallied in the final three frames to comeback and defeat the Carson-Newman Eagles (2-4 overall, 1-2 SAC) 3-2 at Holt Fieldhouse. The come from behind victory runs the Royals winning streak to four consecutive matches on the young season.
In the first two sets, the Royals attack struggled to get going as the Eagles took the first two sets. In the first frame, Queens got as close as 13-10 before the Eagles closed on a 15-4 run. In the second set, the Eagles jolted ahead and continued to find their offense. In the first two sets, Carson-Newman hit over .300 percent while the Royals hit .171.
The Queens attack really got started in the third set as they rallied for seven consecutive points and jumped ahead of the Eagles early. The early momentum was capped off by a
Victoria Wood (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
Lindsay Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) block. Veteran setter
Brooke Farley (Fort Mill, S.C.) set rookie
Kaylin Dowling (Woodleaf, N.C.) up for the kill to close the third set and keep the Royals alive. In the fourth set, Queens carried their momentum over as they jolted ahead quickly to an 8-0 lead. The Eagles attack was stifled as the Royals grabbed the second set by 10 points.
In a winner-take-all fifth set, the two conference rivals went back and forth as fans were greeted with seven ties and five lead changes. While the Royals figured out their offensive rhythm in the final three sets, Queens was able to tally eight of their ten blocks in those sets which halted the Eagles attack. Leading 14-12, southpaw
Kaylin Dowling struck a kill for the victory and left Carson Newman fans stunned.
As a team, both squads tallied 56 kills, but the Royals hit .205 percent. Queens limited the Eagles hitting percentage in the final three sets to a sub .120 percent. Rookie
Kaylin Dowling was outstanding on the afternoon notching a double-double with a game-high 15 kills and 21 digs.
Victoria Wood contributed 12 kills and a .229 hitting percentage while
Lindsay Elmore added seven kills.
Brooke Farley continued to set the attack up with 44 assists.
The Royals will return to the court next weekend when they travel to Florence, S.C. for the Francis Marion Invitational. The two-day event kicks off on Friday, Sept. 17 with Queens slated to play Gannon University at 9:00 a.m. before squaring off with the University of Charleston at 5:00 p.m. Be sure to follow the Royals on
