Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Comeback Falls Short As Royals Upended By Wolves Wednesday Night

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The No. 9/16 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (7-2, 4-2), fell to Newberry College (3-5, 3-3 SAC), 67-65, at Eleazer Arena on Wednesday night. Trailing by 20 at the halftime break, the Royals mounted a second half comeback before falling just short as they drop their first road game of the season and their second game of the year.

The Wolves got out to a hot start, as they jumped out to an early lead seeing it grow to as large at 28-8 with 9:17 remaining in the first half. The Royals would remain resilient, but the Wolves would keep the large deficit for the rest of the first half, as they took a 43-23 lead into the break.

Head Coach Bart Lundy amped up the pressure and intensity in the second half and the Royals would come surging back. Queens would use a 15-2 run to come back from 20 points down to take their first lead of the game, 58-57, with a Trey Hubbard layup with 7:05 to play.

Both teams would be locked in a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way before the score was tied, 65-65, with 3:23 to play. The defense was evident in the final stretch as both teams struggled to gain an open shot to gain the lead. After a missed jumper in the paint by Jamari Smith, the Wolves would hold for one final shot and TJ Brown would nail the winner with one second remaining on the clock.

Quan McCluney led the Royals with 15 points on the night. Kenny Dye also dropped 14 points of his own as well as a team-leading 3 assists. Jay'Den Turner and Gavin Rains led the Royals with 7 rebounds each. Trey Hubbard provided valuable minutes off the bench, scoring 7 points. Queens managed to force 13 turnovers and capitalized with 20 points off turnovers.
