ANDERSON, S.C. - The No. 5 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (5-0, 3-0 SAC) defeated the Anderson Trojans (3-2, 1-2 SAC), 86-79 at the Abney Athletic Center on Tuesday night. The win is the Royals fifth straight to start the season and their third straight conference win.
The game was back-and-forth early on with neither team creating too much separation before the Royals went on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 31-23 with 5:32 remaining in the first half. However, the Trojans came storming back, outscoring the Royals 14-4 the rest of the half, to take a 37-35 lead into the break.
To start the second half, the Royals and the Trojans once again found themselves in a back-and-forth battle. There were 11 lead changes alone in the second half. A
Quan McCluney three-pointer tied the game, 74-74, with 1:48 to go.
The Royals would then score 6 quick points, on two old-fashioned three-point plays to take control of the game. After a three from the Trojans to cut the deficit back to three, free throws from
Kenny Dye and
AJ McKee sealed the game for the Royals as they defeated the Trojans 86-79.
Kenny Dye led the Royals in points, with 19, assists with 4 and he also had a team-high 4 steals.
Gavin Rains led the Royals with 8 rebounds.
Jay'Den Turner and
Trey Hubbard provided a spark for the Royals off the bench. Turner scored 11 points, while shooting 2-4 from deep. Hubbard scored 10 points and tabbed 2 steals on the night.
The Royals shot an efficient 49% from the field and a stellar 50% from deep against the Trojans. Once again, the Royals were stifling on defense, forcing 20 turnovers, while only committing 11 of their own. The Royals were dominant rebounding the basketball, as they corralled in 11 offensive rounds, while only allowing the Trojans to get 5 offensive rebounds.
