CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team suffered a setback on Thursday night falling to the Anderson Trojans, 3-0 at Curry Arena. The loss dropped the Royals overall record to 11-9 and 6-5 in South Atlantic Conference action while the Trojans improved to 13-6 overall and 8-3 in league play.
The opening set saw both offenses find a rhythm on the attack early. Queens hit .333 as a team with 15 kills while Anderson hit .286 generating 19 kills. The Royals led 8-6 early, but the Trojans managed to go on a 6-1 run and regain the lead 12-9. Both teams would go back-and-forth in the set before the Royals fell behind 21-17. A four-point rally by the home team would close the gap to one, but the Trojans held off the late push and took the set 25-23.
The Trojans opened the second set on a 7-3 run. The Royals would claw their way back and close the deficit to 12-9 before the Trojans would use another seven-point run to break the set open. Anderson would close the frame with three straight points and take an early 2-0 lead. For the set, the Trojans attack executed at a high clip notching 16 kills on a .452 hitting percentage. The Royals struggled to find a groove on the attack recording 11 kills and committing five attack errors.
The Royals opened the final set in convincing fashion as they took an early 7-4 lead on four kills and a service ace. Trailing 10-6, the Trojans would mount a 9-0 run and jump ahead of the young Royals squad 15-10. Queens would attempt to rally a comeback and stay alive, but Anderson maintained their attack and grabbed the set and match.
The Royals were led offensively by
Lindsay Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) who recorded nine kills on a .318 hitting percentage and
Alleigh Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) who tallied eight kills and a .292 hitting percentage. The Royals defense had eight block assists, including two from
Lindsay Elmore and
Kayla McDuffie (Winterville, N.C.).
Loren Johnson (Huntersville, N.C.) led the team with 12 digs. The Trojans attack was led by Regan Duty with 13 kills and a .522 hitting percentage and Jaelyn Grimm with 12 kills on .500 hitting percentage.
The Royals will close out their five-match homestand on Saturday, Oct. 23 when they welcome Newberry College at 2:00 p.m. to Curry Arena in the Levine Center.
