Rob Tate announces the addition of six newcomers to his 2020 recruiting class.
Alec Baynard,
Lucas Comroe,
Daniel Duffy,
River Griffith,
Wesley Sharpe, and
Josh Voelkel are set to join the Royals in the fall.
"We keep gaining increasingly more accolades with each incoming class and this one is no exception," said Tate. "We're excited to continue to build our program with exceptional young men who can come in and contribute immediately and I cannot wait to see what this group can do together."
Alec Baynard | 149/157 lbs | Naples, N.C. | West Henderson High School
Baynard remains in North Carolina after competing for West Henderson High School where he is the programs all-time winningest wrestler with 170 career victories. He was a four-time NCHSAA State Championship qualifier and finished his senior year with a runner-up finish after posting a 48-5 overall record. Baynard also wrestled for the North Carolina National Team.
Lucas Comroe | 141/149 lbs | Gypsum, Colorado | Eagle Valley High School
Comroe comes across the country to the Queen City after completing one of the most decorated prep careers at Eagle Valley High School. Comroe is the only wrestler in Eagle Valley's history to place four straight years at the CHSAA State Championships, including two runner-up finishes. He collected a 152-23 career record and wrestled for Team Vision Quest.
Daniel Duffy | 174/184 lbs | Charlotte, N.C. | UNC Charlotte
Duffy joins the Royals as a junior and returns to the mat after spending two years at UNC Charlotte. In high school, Dufy wrestled for Myers Park High School where he won the NCHSAA Western Region Championship and placed fifth as a senior at the NCHSAA State Championships.
River Griffith | 125/133 lbs | Newland, N.C. | Avery County High School
Griffith was a three-time NCHSAA State Champion for Avery County High School and appeared in the NCHSAA State Finals during all four years of his prep career. He amassed 206 career wins and wrestled for Dogtown Wrestling Club where he won multiple championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman styles.
Wesley Sharpe | 174/184 lbs | Durham, N.C. | Voyager Academy
Sharpe also brings a string of success to Queens after being a three-time NCHSAA State Championship qualifier and placing twice at the state meet. He was the NCHSAA State Runner-up as a senior and won the East Region Championship. Sharpe wrestled both freestyle and Greco-Roman while completing at the club level for Fight the Battle Wrestling Club.
Josh Voelkel | Heavyweight | Hudson, N.C. | South Caldwell High School
A three-sport athlete at South Caldwell High School, Voelkel was a two-year captain of the wrestling team and tallied a 138-44 career record. He was a four-time regional qualifier and three-time NCHSAA State Championship qualifier, placing fifth as a senior. In the classroom, Voelkel graduated Cum Laude and was a member of the Beta Club.
This group joins a team that returns 15 letter winners from a team that was 6-9 overall in 2020 and 3-4 in SAC/CC competition before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.
