Three-Point Barrage Leads Queens to Blowout Win Over Coker

Royals hit season-high 13 3-pointers

– The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (15-6, 10-5 SAC) knocked down a season-high 13 3-pointers as the Royals cruised to an 88-56 win over Coker University (5-14, 4-11 SAC) on Wednesday night at the Levine Center. Van Turner Jr. led all scorers with 21 points on seven of 11 3-point shooting, as Queens won by its largest margin of the season and ended a three-game losing streak.

Peanut Cunningham followed with a career-high 16 points along with seven rebounds. Daniel Carr scored 12 with five rebounds, Jamari Smith and Kenny Dye scored 11 apiece, and Jachai Taylor added nine with eight boards.

Queens jumped out to an early 16-3 lead after a 3-pointer by Smith sealed a 9-0 run with 15:01 to go in the first half. The Royals hit four of their first five 3-point attempts before the game's first media timeout.

Malcolm Kennedy helped keep Coker close early, pulling the Cobras within six, 21-15, on a four-point play with 12:35 remaining. Kennedy finished with a team-high 20 points, 13 of which came in the opening half on four made 3's.

Queens ultimately extended its first-half lead to 26-18 when Turner stole an in-bounds pass setting up Taylor for a jumper with 9:13 left in the half. The Royals captured their first 15-point lead, 40-25, after Turner connected on an uncontested 3-pointer with 2:43 until the break.

Two more 3-pointers, one by Carr and the other by Turner, finished an 11-point run that put Queens ahead, 46-25, with 1:24 left in the first. The Royals led, 46-26, at halftime.

Queens played from in front the entire second half, stretching the lead to 30, 79-49, after another 3 by Turner capped a 13-4 run. Kayle Mason extended the lead to its final margin with a drive and layup that put the Royals ahead, 88-56, with just over a minute left to play.

Queens shot 47.5 percent from the field, 43.3 percent from the 3-point line and 68 percent at the free-throw line. The Royals forced 19 turnovers and finished with a +11 turnover margin. Queens scored 31 points off of turnovers and had 13 steals.

Coker was held to 35.7 percent from the floor, 26.1 percent from the 3-point line, and 55.6 at the free-throw line.
