Turner Continues Hot Streak as Queens Tops Carson-Newman

Royals extend winning streak to 6, secure 5th-straight 20-win season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Van Turner Jr. scored 22 points on six of 12 3-point shooting as the Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (20-6, 15-5 SAC) earned its sixth consecutive win with a 83-71 decision over Carson-Newman University (9-17, 6-14 SAC) on Saturday at the Levine Center. Jamari Smith added 16 points and eight rebounds, Jachai Taylor scored 10 points, Gavin Rains scored eight with 10 rebounds, and Daniel Carr scored eight with five rebounds and five assists as the Royals earned their 20th win of the season to notch a fifth-straight 20-win campaign.

After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Royals used a 9-0 late-first-half run to open up a 31-18 lead with 4:55 left in the half. However, after a Kaleb Wallace jumper with 25 seconds left, Carson-Newman trimmed the Queens lead to seven at halftime, 42-35.

Early in the second half, the Royals opened up a 50-38 lead on Turner's second 3 of the half with 17:28 to play. Playing from in front the entire second half, the Queens lead it hits largest, 72-57, after a pair of free throws by Smith with 4:52 remaining. Carson-Newman never pulled closer than two scores in the second half.

Queens shot 42 percent from the field, 30.8 percent from the 3-point line (8-26), and 68 percent at the free-throw line (17-25). The Royals outrebounded the Eagles, 46-38, and committed just eight turnovers to finish with a +7 turnover margin.

Carson-Newman shot 46.3 percent from the field, 25 percent from distance (5-20), and 53.3 percent at the free-throw line (16-30).

Zailan Peeler led the Eagles with 15 points. Richard Henderson followed with 13 and 10 rebounds, and EJ Bush scored 10.
