Royals Throttle UVa-Wise in Front of Packed House on Homecoming

Taylor & J. Turner pace five Royals in double figures

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Five Royals reached double figures as the Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (18-6, 13-5 SAC) defeated the University of Virginia College at Wise (5-19, 1-17 SAC), 100-68, on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,028 fans at the Levine Center. Jachai Taylor scored 17 with eight rebounds as Jay'Den Turner also scored 17 with seven rebounds. Kenny Dye and Jamari Smith each scored 14 and Van Turner Jr. followed with 12, as 11 different Queens players scored from the field.

Leading the entire first half, the Royals stretched their lead to 25 points, 45-20, after a paint jumper by Jermaine Patterson with 2:17 left in the frame. On the final possession of the first half, Chance Sheffey hit a right-wing 3 to slightly tighten the score. Queens led 47-27 at halftime.

Less than 60 seconds into the second half, Taylor's steal and fastbreak dunk extended the Royals lead to 49-27, forcing the Cavaliers to take a quick timeout. Queens continued to pour it on and stretched the lead to 30 points for the first time on a Gavin Rains lay-in with 9:06 left, giving the Royals a 76-46 lead.

A three-point play by Josh Brodowicz with 4:56 left gave the Royals their largest lead of the game, 91-54.

For the game, Queens shot 51.3 percent from the floor, 40.6 percent from the 3-point line (13-32), and 81.8 percent at the free-throw line (9-11), while committing just five turnovers. The Royals outrebounded the Cavaliers, 43-29, and outscored them 50-20 in the paint.

UVa-Wise was led by 30 points from Cameron Whiteside, and as a team shot 41.4 percent from the floor, 40 percent from the 3-point line (12-30), and 53.3 percent at the free-throw line (8-15).
