Phan, Farrelly Lead Royals Past Golden Eagles in Home Opener

CHARLOTTE – Led by three goals in under 12 minutes to begin the first half, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (2-1) grabbed a commanding lead early on and never looked back as the Royals went on to beat University of Charleston by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday night in their home opener at Dickson Field.

The Royals wasted little time following the opening whistle as they quickly went on the offensive attack. Making the first start of her career, freshman Logan Farrelly drew a hard foul in the box less than two minutes into the match and converted on the ensuing penalty kick for her first career goal to help Queens jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, teammate Lulu Phan inserted herself into the mix, putting home her first goal of the season, unassisted, at the 4:36 mark of the first half. She then followed that up just seven minutes later with her second goal of the contest when a pass from Karen Juarez found her streaking into open space before she found the back of the net with a strike from her right foot. Phan finished the match with six shots, four of which went on goal.

Queens was able to maintain the healthy lead from there on, only going on to give up a penalty kick goal in the 66th minute. The Royals outshot the Golden Eagles 13-5 on the night and held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Making her third consecutive start in goal, freshman Erica Turner finished the night with four saves.

Next up, the Royals will once again hit the road, this time for a four-match stretch beginning on Friday, Sept. 13 against University of West Alabama. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
