Charlotte - The Queens University of Charlotte men's wrestling team (0-1) fell short of an upset victory vs UNC Pembroke (4-3) losing by a final score of 20-15.
In a spirited match that came down to the final event, Queens proved up to the challenge against the nation's number 14 ranked team. Queens took an early lead propelled by victories from
Noah Gilbert (133 lbs) and
Devinaire Hayes (141). The advantage was short lived as the Braves responded to win the next three events taking a 17-6 lead.
Queens fought its way back sparked by three consecutive victories from
Stephon Halliburton (174),
Noah Curreri (184), and
Hunter Tobiasson (197) cutting the deficit to 17-15 entering the final match.
John Bennett came up short in the final event and UNC Pembroke finished on top 20-15.
Queens is on the road next Saturday for the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis at 9 a.m.
