Royals withstand potential game-winning 3-point attempt as time expires
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – David Strother missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer from the top of the arc as time expired and the No. 7/8 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (4-0) edged the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (4-1), 80-78, on Sunday afternoon at the Levine Center. Daniel Carr led five Royals in double figures with 19 points. Jamari Smith added 14 points and nine rebounds, Jermaine Patterson and Van Turner Jr. each scored 11, and Jay'Den Turner set a new career-high with 10.
In the first half, Queens took its largest lead of 15 points with 6:16 to play when Patterson drained three consecutive free throws across two possessions to give the Royals a 37-22 lead. Queens led by 11 at halftime, 45-34.
However, propelled by eight second-half offensive rebounds and five second-half made 3's, UNCP tied the score, 76-76, with 2:55 remaining. Moments later, after an Akia Pruitt lay-in, the Braves tied the score again, 78-78, with 1:10 to play.
With 38 seconds left, Carr's layup put Queens in front, 80-78, but after a missed jumper Pruitt, and a series of fouls by UNC-Pembroke, Carr faced a one-and-one chance to potentially seal the game with eight seconds to go.
Carr missed the front end but Kenny Dye contested Strother's potentially game-winning shot as time ran out, sealing the win.
The Royals shot 52.6 percent from the field, 39.1 percent from the 3-point line and 68.8 percent at the free throw line. Queens outrebounded UNCP, 33-31, but went -2 in the turnover margin.
The Braves shot 50 percent from the field, 28 percent from distance and five of seven at the free-throw line. Strother led UNCP with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Pruitt scored 13 with six boards and Tyrell Kirk also scored 13.
Queens returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the University of West Georgia. Opening tipoff from Carrollton, Georgia, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the Queens Sports Network.
