CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Melvin Rubio notched his 10th win of the season, but the Queens University of Charlotte men's wrestling team was unable to overcome Emmanuel on Tuesday night from the Levine Center, falling by a final score of 43-5.
Â
The Royals wrestled only six wrestlers on the night in Rubio,
Jude Lloyd,
Micah Marcin,
Stephon Halliburton,
Austin Watkins and
Jacob Balmas. That left the Lions to pick up 24 uncontested points, out of the 43 total points that they earned, leaving the Royals a hole that proved too deep to overcome.
Â
Rubio led the way for Queens, and with his win, now sits at 10-9 overall for the season. A winner of five of his last seven matches, Rubio dominated Emmanuel's Deven Perez, downing him 19-0 to win via technical fall 4:38 into the match.Â
Â
Rubio becomes the second Royals' wrestler to reach double digits in the win column this season, joining teammate
Noah Curreri, who sits at 19-5. Curreri did not compete against the Lions on Tuesday night.Â
Â
Despite not picking up individual wins, Lloyd, Halliburton, Watkins and Balmas all went the distance against their opponents. Lloyd wrestled in the 149-pound weight class, Halliburton at 165, Watkins at 164 and Balmas at 184.Â
Â
The schedule does not ease up for the Royals, as next up, Queens will take on the No. 10 team in the country in UNC Pembroke. That meet is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. in Pembroke, N.C.Â
