CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) loss to South Atlantic Conference rival Wingate University on Friday night inside Curry Arena.
The Royals fell to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in league play after being held to a season-low .115 hitting percentage. Wingate improved to a perfect 8-0 with a 1-0 mark in the conference despite hitting .187 as a unit, the team's second lowest mark of the year so far. The Bulldogs countered their offensive performance with 71 total digs, including 30 from senior libero Kori Adams.
Wingate opened the match with a 9-2 run in the first set, forcing a Queens timeout before extending the lead to an 11-2 advantage. The Royals responded with six unanswered points to cut the deficit to three points, but Wingate held on for the eventual six-point win.
In the second frame Queens and Wingate traded the lead four separate times and played to 14 total ties on the scoreboard.
Queens' first lead of the match came via a 6-5 score in the second following a kill from sophomore
Olivia Williamson and a Wingate attack error. The Bulldogs gained the advantage and stretched their lead to 14-10 before a 5-1 run from the Royals knotted the score at 15-all.
The Royals held a 19-18 lead on a
Logan Witt kill, but Wingate closed the frame on a 7-3 lead to take the set and build a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Bulldogs led from start to finish in the third and final set to steal the road win.
