Women’s Soccer Makes Program History with Upset of No. 24 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (2-1) picked up a historic win over a top-25 team, downing the previously unbeaten and No. 24-ranked University of Tampa Spartans (1-1-1), by a final score of 2-1 from Pepin Stadium.

The win is a monumental one for Queens, as it marks the first time beating a top-25 opponent since joining the South Atlantic Conference in 2013. It is also the first top-25 win for head coach Denise Brolly since coming to Queens in 2016.

For the second consecutive game, Lulu Phan and Charlotte Ring both found the back of the net for Queens. And for the second consecutive game, Ring stepped up and buried a penalty kick for the for the eventual game-winner.

The Royals got outshot 18-6 by the Spartans but made the most of their four total shots on goal by scoring on two of them.

Phan scored the game's first goal, and her second of the season, in the 20th minute as she brought the ball into the attacking third and unleashed a laser over the head of Tampa goalie Megan Bromwell.

Queens allowed an equalizer late in the first half to Tampa's Elena Barr after surrendering a corner, but much like she did in the Queens victory last time out against UNC Pembroke, Ring put home a penalty kick in the 55th minute after a sliding tackle in the box drew the whistle.

Ring leads the team in goals this year with three through three games after scoring four all of last season. All three goals in this year's campaign have come in the last two games.

Rachel Quest picked up the win in goal and recorded one save.

The Royals now lead the all-time series between the two teams, 1-0-1, after picking up the series' only win.

Queens will remain in Tampa for its next game on Sunday, Sept. 9 as it gets set to face off with Saint Leo. That early-morning matchup is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
