CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte wrestling team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2018-2019 season. This season marks the program's first year in NCAA Division II and first year as a member of the newly-formed South Atlantic Conference Carolinas.
"We're excited for our first full season of competition in Division II with the new Super Region format," said Royals head coach
Rob Tate. "We are thrilled to be a part of the newly formed SACC, which will prove itself to be highly competitive immediately in the sport of wrestling."
Â
The Royals open the season on the road as participants in the Patriot Open hosted by the University of the Cumberlands on Nov. 3. Queens will then face Ouachita Baptist University and Gardner-Webb University in a tri-meet on Nov. 10, and compete at the Wolfpack Open hosted by North Carolina State University on Nov. 18.
"As a GWU alum, and a former teammate and coach of members on both opposing coaching staffs, I am stoked about the opportunity to compete against my alma mater and Ouachita Baptist in early November," said Tate. "Seeing OB that early will be beneficial for our guys come March."
Â
The home schedule begins with a tri-meet versus The Apprentice School and Belmont Abbey College on Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. and includes a tri-meet with Huntingdon College and Blue Light College on Jan. 6. In conference competition, Queens will wrestle Emmanuel College (Jan. 22), Belmont Abbey (Jan. 29) and King University (Feb. 14) in dual-meets at home.
Other notable dates on the schedule include Dec. 2, when Queens will compete in the Newberry Duals hosted by fellow conference member Newberry College, and Dec. 15-16, when the Royals travel to Indianapolis to partake in the Midwest Classic.
"The Newberry Duals will play host to St. Cloud State, the reigning national champions, and we may possibly see them there," said Tate. "The Midwest Classic dubbed the 'DII Midlands,' will be the highlight benchmark right before Christmas Break to see where the boys matchup nationally."
Â
As a tune-up for the regular season, Queens will host an Intrasquad Meet on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. the Levine Center.
"We are going to be put to the grindstone this year, there is no doubt, and there will be some unforeseen challenges," said Tate. "But I have complete confidence in my boys' ability to be resilient and adaptable in overcoming those challenges, and cannot wait to see their growth in the process."
