HARROGATE, Tenn. – Seventh-ranked Queens University of Charlotte, seeded second in the
NCAA DII Men's Basketball Southeast Regional, advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season and fourth time in history after defeating third-seeded UNC-Pembroke this evening by a score of 75-63. The Royals move on to play in the Southeast Regional Final on Tuesday evening with a record of 30-3 matching the most wins in a single season in program history. The Braves close their season at 27-6.
Mike Davis led the Royals this evening just missing a triple-double with 18 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds.
Jalin Alexander also totaled 18 points and recorded eight rebounds.
Todd Withers notched his eighth double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds while
Shaun Willett added 10 points and five rebounds.
After today, the Braves become the Royals' 17
th opponent this season held to less than 70 points. Queens held UNC-Pembroke to 33-percent shooting and outscored the Braves 34-12 in the paint. The Royals also totaled 20 assists in the win.
Following a free-throw by Queens' Alexander just three seconds into play, the Braves would knock down a three-pointer to take their first and only lead in tonight's game. A jumper from Queen's
Solomon Smith tied things up with 17:23 on the clock and a triple from Davis would follow to give control back to the Royals for good. The five points were part of a 10-0 run that put Queens in front 11-3 with 14:39 to play. UNC-Pembroke would cut the margin to three with a 5-0 spurt, but the Royals had increased their lead back out to 10, 22-12, by 6:38. Queens then headed into the locker room on top, 30-25.
The Braves pulled within one of Queens early in the second half after getting off to a 4-0 start, but the Royals responded with a 12-3 run to hold a 42-32 lead with 14:51 on the clock. The margin grew to as much as 13, but with less than six minutes to play, UNC-Pembroke's Strother connected from deep to close the gap to six, 57-51. An and-one play by Queens' Davis followed sparking a 6-2 spurt that was just enough to put the Royals in front by 10 points once again. Queens then went on to increase the spread to 14, the largest of the night, before eventually grabbing the 12-point win to survive and advance.
Pruitt led the Braves with 22 points and seven rebounds. Grant and Strother each added 10 points while Murray Boyles totaled nine points and eight rebounds.
The Royals advance to face the winner of tonight's second Southeast Regional Semifinal game between top-seeded Lincoln-Memorial University and fourth-seeded Clayton State. The Royals defeated the Lakers by a score of 87-67 in their first home game of the season on Nov. 15, 2017. Queens' only three losses this season are to the Railsplitters. Tipoff for the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Final is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 13 in Harrogate, Tenn. The winner will advance to the Elite 8 in Sioux Falls, S.D., taking place March 20-24.
