WINGATE, N.C. – No. 2 Queens University of Charlotte traveled to face Wingate University this evening defeating the Bulldogs on their home court for the first time since the 2005-2006 season. The Royals won 88-71 to move to 22-1 on the year and 14-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Wingate falls to 12-11 on the season and 9-6 in league play following the 17-point loss.
Todd Withers led the Royals with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Jalin Alexander,
Mike Davis, and
Shaun Willett recorded 14 points each while
Lewis Diankulu added 10 points. Davis shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor with four of his shots coming from deep to reach his point total. Additionally,
Ike Agusi dished out 11 assists to tie his career high, while
Daniel Carr led under the glass with six rebounds.
After leading 41-33 at the halftime break, Queens' defense would hold the Bulldogs to 37.14-percent shooting in the second to solidify this evening's win. A dunk from Diankulu would get the Royals going at the start of the half, putting Queens in front by 10 points, 43-33. However, a 14-6 run by Wingate would cut the margin to two, 49-47, with 13:39 left on the clock. A triple from Alexander soon followed to start a 19-2 run that put Queens ahead, 68-49, with less than 10 minutes left in the game. A few minutes later, Davis connected on a three-pointer to give the Royals their largest lead of the night, 80-55, en route to picking up their sixth straight victory.
Queens only trailed the Bulldogs for 29 seconds at the start of tonight's contest as a layup from Alexander at 18:54 put the Royals in front for good. Though the first half played out more tightly contested than the second, Queens would take a nine-point lead at the break after leading by as much as 13 points in the period.
Queens nearly doubled Wingate's points in the paint recording 44 to the Bulldogs' 24. The Royals also forced 16 Wingate turnovers which they converted into 19 points. Additionally, tonight's win completes the home-and-home series sweep for the Royals over the Bulldogs.
Marco Haskins led the Bulldogs with 21 points on the night. Zeriq Lolar was the only other player from Wingate to reach double-figures scoring 10 points.
Queens will remain on the road traveling to Carson-Newman University on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Royals defeated the Eagles back in December by a score of 92-81 to lead the series, 8-3. Withers had a double-double recording a total of 18 points and 12 rebounds. He also reached his 1,000th career point on the final basket of the night. Diankulu led in scoring with what was his second straight 20-point performance this season. He also totaled seven rebounds. Additionally,
Mike Davis helped with 16 points and
Jalin Alexander totaled 15 points. Both Alexander and Davis totaled seven assists each.
