ERIE, Pa. – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey completed its two-game road trip in Pennsylvania this afternoon falling 5-0 to Mercyhurst University. The loss brings the Royals' overall record to 6-3 on the year, while the Lakers improve to 2-8.
In a game where the Royals were outshot 19-3, the Lakers would score three goals in the first half before netting two in the second to claim the 5-0 shutout win. Mercyhurst put 14 shots on goal to Queens' one shot on frame.
Queens' three shots on the day would come from the sticks of
Millie Eaton-Jones,
Mazvita Mtisi, and
Renee Smith. Smith's shot was the lone shot on goal for the Royals, coming in the sixth minute of play.
Jet van den Berg took the loss in the cage after recording nine saves. Additionally, Queens narrowly won the battle for penalty corners, 6-5.
Hayley Skidmore scored today's game-winner for the Lakers, netting back-to-back goals in the first 20 minutes of play to put Mercyhurst ahead 2-0. A goal from Katie Lechner in the 30
th gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead that they took into the halftime break. Alexandria Shumsky then added two goals in the second half to give the game its final score.
Queens returns home to Bessant Field to wrap the home-and-home conference series with Converse College on Saturday, October 13 at noon.
