ANDERSON, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team had its recent three-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling to Anderson University 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21) at the Abney Athletic Center.
The match was relatively close throughout, however, Anderson gained the edge in total kills (55-44) and total blocks (8-3) in picking up the home win. Queens now stands at 9-9 overall with a 5-6 South Atlantic Conference record, while the Trojans improve to 20-2 will an 11-1 league mark.
Anderson opened the match with a narrow three-point win the first set after coming back from a late deficit. The Trojan momentum carried into the second frame, leading to a 10-point margin of victory and a 2-0 match lead.
Queens responded with a 5-1 run to begin the third set, extending the advantage to 10-5 before the Trojans evened the score with five unanswered points. The Royals scored five of the next six points, going ahead 15-11 on a kill from freshman
Jordan Proszenyak.
The third set was tied twice down the stretch until Queens used a kill from sophomore
Logan Witt and three attack errors from the Trojans to force a fourth set of action.
In the fourth, the Royals held an early 13-9 lead until the Trojans tied the match at 13-all with a brief four-point run. The lead traded hands for the final time when Anderson went up 18-17 and eventually pulled away for the win.
Sophomore
Casey Tarvin had a match-high 14 kills to go along with 17 digs and two service aces for her third straight double-double performance, while Proszenyak followed with 12 kills and 12 digs of her own.
Witt chipped in 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage at the net and fellow sophomore
JayCee Jones had 20 digs on defense. Junior
Mallory Swarts finished with 23 assists and her service ace in the third set of play was the 100
th of her career, making her the eighth Royal in program history to achieve the historic mark.
Queens will have a quick turnaround as the team's next match will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 9 against rival and league-leading Wingate University at 7 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
