Royals Fall in Double OT at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  – After edging Bellarmine University, 5-4, at home earlier in the season, the Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team fell 3-2 in double overtime to the Knights this afternoon. Queens now sits 7-6 on the year after dropping the nonconference game, while Bellarmine improves to 7-8.
 
After the Royals jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the opening half of play, Bellarmine was able to knot the game in the second half and send the match into overtime. They then scored in the 83rd minute to force the split in the home-and-home series.
 
Mazvita Mtisi led the Royals with four shots, finding the back of the net once. Maya Forbes followed with three shots to score one goal as well. Lanie Walsh recorded today's loss in the cage after totaling three saves in 47:36. Jet van den Berg recorded three saves in 35 minutes, and Carey Karl tallied one defensive save.
 
Forbes would score the first goal of the game in the 21st minute, but Mandi Isom of the Knights soon answered to equalize the match at 1-1. Mitsi's goal would come in 31st off of a penalty corner, and the Royals went on to take the 2-1 lead into the halftime break. Millie Eaton-Jones recorded the assist on Mtisi's goal.
 
Queens was held to just three shots in the second half as Bellarmine totaled eight. One of the Knights' shots would slip past Queens' Walsh, knotting the game at 2-2 in the 59th minute. The game remained tied until the end of regulation forcing overtime where Bellarmine's Lindsey Reynolds scored the game-winner.
 
The Royals were outshot 20-14, putting six shots on goal to Bellarmine's 10. However, Queens did earn eight penalty corners compared to Bellarmine's five.
 
Isom led Bellarmine with two goals this afternoon, while Breanna McWhorter was credited with the win in goal.  
 
Queens will face Lindenwood tomorrow at noon in Louisville.
