CHARLOTTE, N.C. -Â The Queens University of Charlotte wrestling team has added eight new athletes to its inaugural roster, head coach Ken Chertow announced.
"I am glad that so many highly motivated student-athletes share my vision and commitment to excellence and chose to join me here at Queens," said Chertow. "We're off to a great start with over 25 dedicated wrestlers from 12 states joining us here at Queens."
Marcelino Aponte III, a freshman from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was a two-time North Carolina 4A State Champion wrestler, taking the title in 2016 and 2017. Prior to capturing the crown, Aponte placed sixth at the 2015 state championships, as his high school team, Cape Fear High School, captured the championship as a dual team.
Drew Barrett, a Charlotte native, joins the Royals as a transfer from Gardner-Webb University. Prior to his collegiate career, Barrett competed in wrestling and football at East Mecklenburg High School. In his career, Barrett won the SW4A Conference Championship, was selected all-region and was a North Carolina state qualifier.Â
Marshall Frank, a freshman and a member of the Queens rugby team, was a multi-sport athlete at East Hendersonville High School, in Hendersonville, North Carolina where he competed in football and wrestling. On the mat, Frank was a conference champion, North Carolina state qualifier, selected all-area, named a Wrestling-Kiwanis All-Star, and the East Henderson Male Athlete of the Year.
Naftali Horowitz, a freshman from Passaic, New Jersey, attended and wrestled for the Yeshiva University High School for Boys. There he was a two-time Wittenberg Jewish National Champion and twice voted as the Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Simon Kitzis comes to Queens from Bloomsburg University, where he competed on the wrestling team. While in high school in Newton, Mass., Kitzis was a New England Champion and while at Wyoming Seminary Prep School. He also was twice named the Beast of the East Champion and a 2008 FILA National Champion.
Micah Marcin, from Durham, North Carolina, is a transfer from North Carolina Central University. During his time at Charles E. Jordan High School, Marcin was a member of the football, lacrosse and wrestling teams. On two occasions he was a state qualifier, and three-times a PAC-6 All-Conference selection, with over 120 wins compiled. Marcin was also twice named the Jordan High School Most Outstanding Wrestler, and once the 2016 Rainey Memorial Tournament MOW.
Seth Petarra, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, joins the Royals as a transfer from Lake Erie College. In 2016 while wrestling for Signal Mountain High School, Petarra was an A-AA Regional and State Champion.
Monquez Townsend, from Lumberton, North Carolina, is a transfer from Colby Community College. While at Lumberton High School, Townsend competed in football, and track and field, in addition to wrestling. He placed third at the Junior College Regional Tournament and was also a national qualifier while wrestling at Colby CC.
In 2017-2018 the Royals enter their first year of competition under Chertow's direction.
