Late Goals Not Enough for Royals against No. 9 Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team battled with No. 9 Carson-Newman College (6-0-1, 3-0-1) tonight, falling 4-2. The Royals, now 4-2-1 on the year and 2-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, were led by Alana Jefferson and Lulu Phan, who scored for Queens tonight.

Carson-Newman opened the scoring with a header by Helen Seed in the 21st minute of play off an assist from Lara Hallgrimsdottir. The Eagles added to their lead one minute later when Alex Brandan fed Catarina Realista, setting the score at 2-0. The final goal of the half would be a solo shot from Carson-Newman's Magda Mosengo, leaving Queens down, 3.

Leanne Bryant, Charlotte Ring, and Phan would all give the Royals chances to get on the board in the first half, but neither would be able to find the back of the net.

Queens looked to battle back in the second half getting five shots off in the first 15 minutes, but they were unlucky in putting one away. In the 67th minute, Carson-Newman's Lauren Wade buried a shot on the left side of the net off of a pass from Holly Talbut-Smith making the score 4-0.

In the 78th minute, Jefferson would lift the Royals by finding the open net and putting the team on the scoreboard. Queens continued to fight back and in the 83rd minute, Phan received a pass from Emma Rose Stockton, heading it past Eagles goalkeeper, Jacqueline Burns. Soon after, time would expire with the Royals down 4-2.

The Royals totaled six shots on goal to Carson-Newman's 10 after recording 11 total shots this evening. Queens goalkeeper, Rachel Quest, made six saves while the Eagles, Burns totaled four saves.

The Royals return home on Saturday, September 30 to face Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Royals fell, 1-0, to the Bears last season in a game that came down to the last few minutes of play. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
